BDE Oil Restrictor and Anti-Drainback Valves - Currently being tested

The stock oil restrictor and anti-drainback valves that are pressed into the VG30’s head gasket surface serve several purposes.

1.   The restrictor, which is closest to the front of the engine, limits the volume of oil that is used to activate the variable Valve Timing Control (VTC). At idle and high RPM the VTC is not activated and the oil is merely dumped back into the sump; the restrictor is sized to guarantee this does not cause an excessive loss of pressure or volume.

2.   The anti-drainback valve is multi-functional in that it not only restricts the volume of oil to the lifters and cam bearings, but it also prevents the oil from draining out of the passages when the engine is not running. Restricting the volume of flow cuts down on excessive oil in the top-end, saving it for the more critical rod and main bearings, while preventing drainback reduces lifter noise at startup.

These devices should be removed before cleaning the engine block. The problem is that removal is difficult and they are destroyed in the process. BDE puts a new spin on the design of these parts by making them removable AND reusable. Key features of BDE restrictor/anti-drainbacks are:

  • 10-32 internal threads to allow the use of a slide-hammer to remove them undamaged so they can be cleaned and re-installed after the block is ready for assembly.
  • Orifice sizes are exactly the same as OEM Nissan.
